The Chancellor's Forum is an initiative of the University of Alberta Senate that invites the public to campus to engage with a timely topic related to the University of Alberta. NOTE: The event is in person and observing all current COVID protocols. Masks are appreciated but not required. Moderator Paula Simons was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 2018, after a long and distinguished career as one of western Canada’s most acclaimed journalists. She has been a radio documentary-maker, a playwright, and an author of popular history. Over the course of her 23 years with the Edmonton Journal, Senator Simons earned two National Newspaper Awards and six National Newspaper Award citations of merit. Born and raised in Edmonton, Senator Simons holds a B.A. Honours degree from the University of Alberta, and a Master’s degree from Stanford University. Panelists Gleise M. da Silva As the first BCRC-Hays Chair in Beef Production Systems, Gleise will translate the latest research to Canada’s beef and cattle producers — all with the goal of helping them save money, maintain forage lands and advance the Canadian beef industry’s leadership in sustainable production. Over the next 10 years, Gleise will work with faculty researchers, graduate students and support staff to lead cutting-edge research to support the industry. Isha Datar Isha is executive director of New Harvest, a nonprofit research institute that funds open, public cultured meat research. She has been pioneering cellular agriculture since 2009, driven by a passion to see transformative technology create a better world. In 2010, Isha published a review paper in the scientific journal Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, among the first handful of papers to ever discuss cultured meat in academic literature. After co-founding Muufri (now Perfect Day Foods) and Clara Foods (now The EVERY Company) in 2014, she transferred her founding equity to New Harvest and used it to establish an endowment for cell ag research. In 2015, Isha coined the term "cellular agriculture" — officially creating a category for agriculture products produced from cell cultures rather than whole plants or animals. Isha is a Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow and Director’s Fellow at the MIT Media Lab. Isha holds a BSc. in cell and molecular biology from the University of Alberta and a master's in biotechnology from the University of Toronto. Alison Sunstrom Alison is the founder/CEO of CNSRV-X Inc. (Conserve X), a Canadian company researching and applying emerging technology in agriculture. Co-CEO/Founder of GrowSafe Systems Ltd., which developed a technology platform that continuously acquired data from individual animals and their environment, improving profitability and reducing livestock production’s carbon footprint. Previously, Alison led the development of one of Canada’s first electronic data interchange projects with a Canadian railroad. William “Bill” Shotyk Since October 2011, Dr. Shotyk has held the position of Bocock Chair in Agriculture and Environment at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, in the Department of Renewable Resources. Dr. Shotyk is also a participant in the Land Reclamation International Graduate School (LRIGS) program sponsored by NSERC CREATE.
